Mini Memoir: Brandon & Melissa

Mini Memoir: Brandon & Melissa

“When our wedding song comes on, no matter where we are, we have to dance with each other. It has led to us dancing in some funny places!”

Names and current city of residence:
Brandon & Melissa from Hilliard, OH

How long have you been married?
9 years this July

What did you enjoy most about being engaged?
How excited we were to plan our day together. We love a good party!

What event do you remember best from your engagement?
Our engagement itself was the best part! We were in Vegas and got to enjoy it—just the two of us—for a day or two before we told anyone except our immediate family. It was great because we got to live in the moment (and off our phones), relax, and enjoy. We were in our own world.

When you were engaged, what were you most looking forward to on the wedding day/weekend?
Having all our friends and family together in one place.

What traditions did you carry through to your wedding, or what traditions did you start yourselves?
When our wedding song comes on, no matter where we are, we have to dance with each other. It has led to us dancing in some funny places!

Describe one or two memories or individual moments that you remember most from your wedding celebration.
I remember my sister coming to tell me the bad news that it was raining and we had to move the ceremony indoors. It hadn’t even occurred to me to check the weather because it was already so hot and there wasn’t anything I could do to change it. I was just so excited to be getting married to Brandon that none of it mattered. That moment sticks out because I knew then that I was focused on the marriage, not the wedding, which was our mantra throughout the whole planning process.

“I knew then that I was focused on the marriage, not the wedding, which was our mantra throughout the whole planning process.”

What is one way you made your wedding “your own”?
We each came up with our 3 non-negotiables—the things that were really important to us. We spent our money on those things and compromised on everything else. It kept us focused on what mattered to us.

What is one thing you learned about one other during your marriage thus far?
We are both naturally resilient people and we can accomplish anything together. We were so independent before we found one another and, over time, we have realized how much stronger we are together.

What is one piece of advice for currently engaged couples?
Treat your wedding like the most fun project you've ever worked on together. Lean on each other and make it a joint effort. It is basically a huge team-building exercise that can help you figure out how to work well together for years to come!
